2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
J.F. Shields finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year J.F. Shields finished eighth in Class 1A region one with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Panthers lost as many games as in any season since 2009. The defense allowed a team record 630 points last season. The Panthers have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2004 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Panthers last playoff victory came during the 2000 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as J.F. Shields averaged scoring just 1.4 points a game. The Panthers also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 63.0 points a game. The Panthers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 0-18 record. Since 2010, the J.F. Shields football program has struggled with a record of 2-35. Over the past 22 seasons, J.F. Shields has not won much with a record of 61-156. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 51st in Class 1A and 341st in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2001. The Panthers are led by head coach James Brooks who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 0-18 over the past two seasons at J.F. Shields. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Brooks. The J.F. Shields Panthers will play in Class 1A region one during the 2017 season. The Panthers enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 26 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Panthers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at J.F. Shields will be to simply win some games. J.F. Shields simply does not have the numbers to be competitive on the football field at this time. With just 60 students, the Panthers are one of the smallest schools playing the game and have little chance of being successful. The Panthers open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Kinston on Friday, September 1 at Panther Field (The Pit). Last year the Kinston Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 1A region two. The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a loss to Samson by a score of 42-20. J.F. Shields and Kinston have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 0-2-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2010 with Kinston winning by a score of 60-8. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
